This study examines the policies and structures of local and state health departments, and how they impact public health. The study will focus on the structural arrangements of the local boards of health (such as whether the boards of health are elected or appointed) and the level of state health department centralization, and how they affect performance, fiscal health, innovation, collaboration, and strategic planning.
Public Health Infrastructure
How public health departments function and interact, and how the health system is structured can impact the public’s health and safety. Public health infrastructure provides the foundation for the distribution of material and human resources needed to deliver sufficient care to communities. Laws can enforce regulations that strengthen quality of care, accessibility, and assure safety for individuals and the population.
