This dataset examines some of the characteristics of laws and regulations governing reporting requirements, database access, data retention, and penalties for unlawful disclosure of data for US prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMP).

Prescription drug overdose is a leading cause of injury death in the United States, responsible for almost 15,000 deaths per year. Data are generated and transmitted to a central repository when a prescription for a controlled substance is dispensed.
