Many states regulate the advertisement for abortion services by prohibiting individuals from advertising abortion-inducing medication and posting notice of abortion services. Although the U.S. Supreme Court held that this type of restriction infringed on First Amendment rights in Bigelow v. Virginia (1975), some states still have abortion advertising restrictions in their laws.

This dataset includes state laws establishing advertising restrictions for abortion, as well as case law and attorney general opinions affecting the enforceability of these laws, in effect as of August 31, 2020.

This map was created as part of the Abortion Law Project, a collaboration between the Policy Surveillance Program, Guttmacher Institute, Resources for Abortion Delivery (RAD), American Civil Liberties Union, Center for Reproductive Rights, National Abortion Federation, and Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
